The Minister of Health had said that no final decision has been made and today the PM said that while they haven't exactly moved the date, they're following the science to find the safest way forward.

Notably, the number of daily new cases in Quintana Roo is just starting to trend down.

Border Reopening Still Set for February First, Unless…

The omicron variant has broken the infection rate records around the world and Belize has been no different since this mutation of the COVID-19 virus was detected in Belize. But this strain of the virus is not as deadly as the delta variant. So up to this point, the government’s plan is still to reopen the land borders, unless omicron wreaks more havoc.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“I know it is something of great concern to everyone and we continue to monitor it on a regular basis, also in Cabinet. We believe though that we’ll be able to open the borders sooner than later. We have closed our borders since the end of March of 2020. We’re almost coming to March of 2022 – for two years – and it is creating some problems for people to travel, for doing business, for trade. So, we need to find a way how we can open the borders safely, and that is what we’re working at. In December we said that we were going to open both the borders and schools at the same time. But once we saw the Omicron hit Belize and the numbers increasing, felt that it’s important for us to first take on education because that was the priority and now that that has started – they say knock on wood – so far, we’ve been going fairly safe. Now it’s now to look at the borders as to how and when we can open it. We still plan to open it on the first of February, but if there’s enough evidence and reasons as to why we shouldn’t open it, then we do so. I know that a lot of businesses benefit greatly because the borders have been closed, but the reality is that we can’t stay closed forever and we need to open the borders.”

Borders Getting Ready For Feb 01 Opening

Will the borders still open on February 1st?

While the Minister of Health had previously said that no final decision was made, the prime minister confirmed it today. And while they're still working out the details of the requirements to cross, the PM said that a vaccination is a must if you plan on going shopping at Chedraui and Sam's Club.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"The borders is still set to reopen on the first of February at least if nothing big happens but the plan is that we want to open the first of February."

Reporter
"What sort of regulations are we looking at it?"

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well one of the things, and I think I need to verify, but one of the things I think that we want to say is that you must be vaccinated to be able to cross the border so that's one of the things and hopefully that will encourage more people to get vaccinated, we need to get vaccinated, that's the only way you can protect yourself and we can protect you. The numbers for vaccination has been down now to about 200 per day and we need to do more. If we could get at least to 70% then I think we would be way much better off."

Borders to Reopen Feb 1; Vaccination May Be Requirement

This week the neighboring state of Quintana Roo, Mexico went to level orange on its five scale COVID-19 alerts. Orange is second highest, just below red, with a number of restrictions in place. That orange will be activated for the next week. But so far, the plan to reopen Belize’s land borders by February first is still in effect. This morning we asked Prime Minister John Briceño for an update. He confirmed that the plan to reopen the land border next week Tuesday is still a go. However, not much has been said about the regulations that will be enforced at the borders for Belizeans. It is possible that only the vaccinated will be allowed to cross the border.

Prime Minster John Briceño

“The border is still set to be open on the first of February, at least if nothing big happens. But the plan is we want to open it the first of February.”

Paul Lopez

“What sort of regulations can we expect there?”

Prime Minister John Briceño

“Well, one of things, and I need to verify. One of the things we want to see is that you must be vaccinated to be able to cross the border. That is one of the things. And, hopefully that will encourage more people to get vaccinated. We need to get vaccinated. That is the only way you can protect yourself, or we can help to protect you. The number of vaccination has been down now to about two hundred per day. We need to do more. If we could get at least to seventy percent, then I think we will be way much better off.”
