And what happens if you test positive? Well, if you're travelling in a
private vehicle, you'll be expected to go straight home and quarantine.
But if you're travelling with others for example, in a bus you will
have to take one of the gold standard vehicles that are at the border.
So, apart from the $100 test, you'll also need to carry extra cash in
case of emergency. And if you absolutely can't afford it, the ministry
said they'll step in but only when there is no other option:
Dr. Melissa Diaz - Deputy Director, Central Health Region
"If a Belizean tests positive, what we are advising is that person gets
into one of the gold standard taxis or vans that are there and they've
been there on a regular basis because we've been opening for the
tourist sector and persons needing to travel since June of last year so
there are many trained gold standard transportation there. It's similar
for instance if a tourist comes to Belie and tests positive prior to
going back to the states for instance, they've got to ensure that they
are aware that these are the protocols to reenter the US, so they've
got to ensure that they can pay for a room for at least the ten days
isolation, ensure that they can get their testing done in order to show
when they booked in for their flight, so it's a similar circumstance,
we're asking the general public if you're going to travel, if it's
going to be for more one night, more than two nights, ensure that
you're prepared because there is a possibility that you could test
positive coming back in."
Courtney Menzies
"But what happens if they reach to that point and, no money noh deh?"
Dr. Melissa Diaz
"Well there are lots of different ways that the border has been
working, we have had many people travelling for medical purposes,
students, and they have been facilitated by getting a taxi into Corozal
and then the Ministry of Health trying to assist in getting the person
to their home."
Reporter
"Who then foots that bill?"
Dr. Melissa Diaz
"Well for us at Central Health Region we had very similar situation at
the PGIA as Ms Lisa Tillett would tell you, sometimes late at night we
were there to bring our vehicles to try to accommodate persons as best
as possible so at the border points as well, we would be able to have
the transport from the Ministry of Health and Wellness from northern
region, perhaps we could assign one van in order to ensure that if it's
an emergency we can help to facilitate it's not something that we would
want to promote and say this would be available and the majority of
persons who have been in this situation have been able to come over to
Corozal and get a family member to assist."
Reporter
"So it's safe to tell Belizeans if you catch COVID in Mexico and you
don't have the money for transport, the ministry of health will foot
the bill?"
Dr. Melissa Diaz
"No I don't think that's something that we want to necessarily say that
is the case, that's the exception if there is absolutely no other way
that you can go we would try to assist but before you travel, these
things you've got to think about, all the responsibilities, everything
that may happen especially that we're still in this COVID pandemic."
