Patches of sargassum are making their way slowly to Belize's coastline. In 2019, a mass influx of sargassum affected beaches, restaurants and hotels along the coast and on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. Back then sargassum invasion caused businesses to lose tens of thousands of tourism dollars. This year, the sargassum is returning and places like San Pedro will be affected. Mayor Gualberto "Wally" Nunez says his council has begun working with the Belize Tourism Board to mitigate the effects.
