There's no telling how many more gas price increases we'll see. And some of them may pass right over our heads, since the government has ceased sending out press releases with every increase. There have been at least four recent hikes in prices that the media was not informed of - we had to get the information form sources in the private sector.
This breakdown in transparency is alarming and it affects those who are unaware of the change until they go to the pump. But it seems the prime minister has no idea that this happening because when we pressed him about it, he insisted that we were still being notified:
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Honestly, the truth of the matter is that we're not controlling the publication because you get it the minute it hits the pump."
"The minute it hit the pump you see the change so it's not that we're hiding the publication."
Reporter:
"The press release, we want it back."
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"We want many things."
Reporters:
"No. [arguing]"
Courtney Menzies:
"Sir, but this is transparency, this is public information."
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"But you get the information."
Courtney Menzies:
"We don't sir, we don't."
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"You get the information when it goes to the pump, you know exactly what is going up but this is something I can bring up with the people at the Ministry of Finance."
Reporter:
"It helps some people."
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Alright, can we have another question?"
The last time we got an official notice of a fuel increase was in early February.
