Contact sports suffered greatly during COVID, with basketballers, footballers, and volleyballers not permitted to play, much less participate in tournaments.

And now, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Transportation is organizing and bankrolling to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars - an ambitious national basketball competition for all levels of play.

The major sporting initiative was outlined at a press conference this morning in Belize City:



After this tournament ends in August, the National Sports Council says it will move unto the school basketball tournament.

The first-of-its-kind National Basketball Tournament hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Transport was held over the past weekend in Belize City. The two-day event was the culmination of two months of competitions at the local level. The games were played by both female and male athletes in the under 15, under 18 and senior categories. The tournament awarded the winners cash prizes and scholarships for the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
