On Sunday, the women's cross country classic took place and taking the top two spots were American cyclists from Team Cardinal. Using a tactic to break away from the pack, Katy Sorrel and Morgan Stern put their best foot forward and bested the Belizean cyclists in the race that started in San Ignacio and finished at Digi Park in Belize City. Following the win, the American duo spoke of the experience and strategy.
Katy Sorrell, Winner, Female Cross Country Cycling Classic 2022
"We worked really hard and so happy we made it. It was a lot of work but I couldn't have done it without Morgan. We've been training a lot in the mountains - in North Carolina and South Carolina back home - so all of that training really helped. We just had a plan to attack up all the long hills as hard as we could and it worked. So, all of our training has really been paying off. It was a whole lot more windy than back home. We were racing in like forty degree weather so it was hot and we had to keep pouring water on us. So the course was tough. The wind and the heat really started to get to us like the last ten miles."
Morgan Stern, Second Place, Female Cross Country Cycling Classic 2022
"I am really excited, really tired. But we are really excited to be able to take first and second today. It was great, it was amazing. It was such a hard, but fun race. Having everyone cheering all across the race, you don't see that in America, hardly ever. So that definitely kept us pushing on the pedals, harder than I wanted to."
Belizean Alicia Thompson rounded out the top three.
