Extended Highlights of the CONCACAF Qualifier

Lady Jaguars Claim One Victory in Qualifiers

The Women's Senior National Football Team, the Lady Jaguars, are on their way back from San Salvador, El Salvador. That's after playing their fourth and final match in the first round of the 2022 Concacaf Women's Championship Qualifier.

This tournament also determines which country will get to play in the World Cup, and only the team that comes in first in each group advances to the next round. Team Belize played as part of Group D against Panama, Salvador, Aruba, and Barbados.

The Lady Jaguars lost to Panama and El Salvador, who are considered football powerhouses in the region, and the match against Aruba ended in a draw. So, Team Belize was looking for its first win in this tournament against Barbados. That game happened yesterday, and at its conclusion, the Lady Jaguars won with a final score of 3 goals to zero against their opponents.

In a post-game press conference yesterday, the head coach, Wayne Casimiro, and the team captain, Jayda Brown discussed the team's overall performance in this tournament:

Yesterday's goal scorers were Shenda Casimiro, who scored the first, and Jayda Brown who score the second and third goals. With yesterday's performance, Belize came in 3rd in this first round.

Women's National Team Beats Barbados

The Belize Women's National Team finished third in its group in CONCACAF's World Cup Elimination Rounds. On Tuesday, Belize came up on top against Barbados in a three-nil victory in El Salvador. Shendra Casimiro scored the first goal for Belize, followed by team captain Jayda Brown who scored two goals. While Belize's women's team did not qualify for the World Cup, Coach Wayne Casimiro says the victory over Barbados shows just how much the team has grown over the last two months.

Wayne Casimiro, Head Coach, Belize Women's National Team

"I spoke to the players with regards to playing with heart. That was my main thing. I said, I could give them all the tactical work, all the explanation I am going to give, but if they step on the pitch without their hearts then the result is going to be a bad one, but if they play with their heart they are going to get a positive result. It is a growing process for us. It has been a learning process for myself and the players, learning to build a family. That is why I always tell them that if they connect as a family off the field on the field they will do that. I always tell them we just have to work and keep getting better. That is my motto to them all the time. We get better. They have grown tremendously and that is what I keep telling them. If they grow as a unit it is going to be better for them. These are young players. Most of them are under twenty. So, the next couple of years they should be better at what they are doing."
