September Independence Happenings in San Pedro, Belize: 2022

Just this afternoon, I saw the first decorations going upand soon they will be all over the island. September is THE celebration month in Belize. Celebrating 2 holidays: Sept 10th (and the Battle of St George's Caye) and September 21 (Independence Day) and then filling the space in between.

Slow-season you say? Some businesses close for renovations and vacations but there is a TON going on on Ambergris Caye and around the country. And this year is the first year we've had proper celebrations since 2019. Two Septembers off = lots of pent of September celebration energy.

In preparations to become a sovereign nation, the founding fathers went through a democratic process to select the country's flag and national symbols.

In 1819, the colony then known as British Honduras obtained its coat of arms. The design featured a mahogany tree, (reference the rich sylvan resources of the area), as well as a shield and two supporters. The supporters are a mestizo, the other a ''Creole," as the term is defined in Belize). These men hold tools of the trade-an ax and the paddle used to send trees downriver for export.

The shield is divided into three sections-a paddle and a maul crossed on a white background, a two.handed saw and an ax crossed on a dark yellow, and a ship sailing over waves on blue.

The Latin motto "Sub umbra floreo" ("Under the shade I flourish") is a reference to the area's forests and its establishment as a colony under British protection.

The red, white and blue Belize Flag is a symbol of the unity of our nation.

September Independence Happenings in San Pedro, Belize: 2022

September is here, bringing with it the patriotic celebrations commemorating the 224th anniversary of the Battle of St. George's Caye and Belize's 41st Independence Day celebration. The patriotic month was welcomed across the country with the annual flag-raising ceremony. In San Pedro Town the San Pedro Town Council held the annual ceremony at 6AM on September 1st at Central Park. The event saw the presence of local authorities and proud Belizeans who together sang the national anthem while the flag was hoisted.

This year's September Celebrations theme is held under 'Valiant and Bold, Proud and Strong! Belize Rebounds at 41.' Mayor Gualberto 'Wally' Nuez welcomed those in attendance during the ceremony and delivered a few remarks. He highlighted that San Pedro and the rest of the country have something in common. They have both rebounded following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. After delivering his remarks, the Mayor, along with another council member raised the Belizean flag. Meanwhile, islander Natalie Arceo sang the national anthem. The flag raising ceremony is the official launch of the several patriotic activities planned for September throughout the country culminating with Independence Day on September 21st.

San Pedro Town Looks so Pretty for the 2022 September Celebrations

September celebrations are about to switch into high gear in San Pedro. September 9th and 10th are the first big events. On the evening of September 9th, there is a Fire Engine Parade to kick things off and then September 10th, in the morning, there is a Uniform Parade of kids paired with incredibly hot hot temperatures. It's that time of year!

Yesterday was a very pretty day - except for an early afternoon downpour! The town looks so pretty in her red, white, and blue. Is it possible to vote for flags draped across the street every day of the year?
