Sargassum Forecast from April 26 to May 4: The heavy influx of sargassum will continue for the next few days as satellite imagery shows several more sargassum mats heading towards the country. Marine Conditions: Phoenix Resort in San Pedro The Caribbean Sea There is the potential for heavy rain this weekend for the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Scattered showers and thunderstorms persist in the SW Caribbean due to abundant atmospheric moisture and divergence aloft, S of 12N between 76W and 82W. Isolated showers are also occurring in the eastern Caribbean due to a surface trough near the Lesser Antilles. Fresh to strong northeasterly winds are noted off the Colombia coast and within the Windward Passage. Gentle to moderate tradewinds prevail across the rest of the basin. Seas are 5-7 ft in the Colombian Basin, 2-3 ft in the NW Caribbean and 4-6 ft elsewhere. For the forecast, fresh to strong trades will pulse over the Windward Passage and offshore southern Hispaniola during the next few days. Fresh to strong easterly winds offshore Colombia will become moderate to fresh today and continue through the weekend. Periodic showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue across the SW Caribbean through the weekend. Northerly swell will propagate through the Atlantic waters and Caribbean passages today and will subside by tonight. A trough will move across the eastern and central Caribbean this weekend and into early next week. Much less rain about, just a few small showers. The Caribbean winds are back to normal ESE with clouds developing, only a few heavy. Only a few areas of high level clashing.

Looks as if today will be mainly dry and sunny, but with significant clouds during the morning and reducing this afternoon.

Present Condition: Mostly clear skies, a few thin and widely scattered clouds on the mainland. Clear skies in San Pedro. A light easterly airflow prevails over the area.

24hr Forecast: Sunny skies with a few cloudy spells during the daytime and partly cloudy skies tonight. Showers will be generally isolated with slightly more showers affecting northern and inland areas this afternoon, coastal areas tonight and the northern districts tomorrow morning.

Outlook: From Saturday afternoon through to midday on Sunday is for partly cloudy skies with shower activity being generally isolated.

River Conditions

REGION 7 - On the RIO HONDO at Blue Creek North, and downstream at Santa Cruz, San Antonio, San Roman, and Douglas, levels are below normal and steady. On the NEW RIVER at Tower Hill levels are below normal, and at Caledonia, levels are near normal and steady.

REGION 9 - On the MACAL RIVER, reservoir levels at all BECOL facilities remain below the spillways; and at San Ignacio, levels remain below the low-level bridge. The MOPAN RIVER at Benque Viejo Town near normal and rising slowly. On the BELIZE RIVER at Double Run, levels are normal and steady; lagoon levels on the CROOKED TREE LAGOON are below the causeway and steady.

REGION 11 - On the SIBUN RIVER at Freetown Sibun, levels are near normal and increasing slowly. The SOUTHERN LAGOON at Gales Point Village is near normal and steady. In watersheds on the EASTERN SLOPES OF THE MAYAN MOUNTAINS, levels have minimally increased and is now steady; and the SITTEE RIVER at Kendal Bridge, is near normal and fluctuating.

On the Swasey and Bladen branches of the MONKEY RIVER, levels are near normal and steady. On the RIO GRANDE at San Pedro Columbia and Big Falls South, all levels are below normal and increasing slowly. Levels on the DEEP RIVER at Medina Bank is below normal and increasing slowly.

On the MOHO RIVER at Blue Creek South and Jordan, and on the TEMASH RIVER at Crique Sarco, levels are near normal and steady.

REGION 13 - The SARSTOON RIVER is normal and steady.

FLOOD FORECAST

REGION 9 - On the MACAL RIVER, at all BECOL facilities, reservoir levels are expected to increase; and at San Ignacio, levels are expected to increase. On the MOPAN RIVER at Benque Viejo Town, levels are expected to increase to above normal levels. There are some mid-high level clouds clashing with the Caribbean winds over Belize, causing some isolated rain showers, that might get more later.
