The Caribbean Sea

A strong gradient between subtropical high pressure and lower pressure in the SW Caribbean is supporting mainly fresh to strong trade winds across the majority of the central and eastern basin, with gentle to moderate winds in the NW Caribbean. The strongest winds are near the coast of Venezuela and Colombia, where seas are 6-8 ft. Seas are 5-7 ft elsewhere in the eastern and central basin, and 3-5 ft in the NW Caribbean. Other than the previously discussed convection associated with the tropical waves, numerous moderate to isolated strong convection and tstms are in the SW Caribbean from 10N to 16N between 74W and 81W associated with an active East Pacific monsoon trough.

For the forecast, surface ridging north of the area extending through portions of the eastern Gulf of Mexico will persist through the middle of next week, north of an active monsoon trough over the southwest Caribbean. This pattern will support fresh to strong E winds along with occasionally rough seas between these features into early next week. The strongest winds are expected to be in the south-central Caribbean and Gulf of Honduras. Looking ahead, a trough will form over the Gulf of Honduras by late Thu.

In the latest update the National Hurricane Center has another area of interest in the Pacific. The first is a broad area of low pressure off the southwest coast of Mexico that is producing disorganized rains and thunderstorms with a very high probability of cyclonic formation with 30% for 48 hours and 80% for 5 days and is could form a tropical depression at the beginning of this new week or in the middle as it moves northwest.

The second area of interest is expected to form south or southwest of Central America a low pressure center with gradual development over the next few days as it moves northwest slowly. It currently has a chance of development 20% for 5 days. However it may cause heavy rains in Central America in the next few days.

Presently, there is only ESE Caribbean winds and they have a fair amount of lines of cloud over the land, causing many small rain patches. These will probably clear as the temperature rises. Very little effect from any high level cloud at present, but there is a lot of ITCZ activity off Honduras and Nicaragua which is increasing the water content in the Caribbean winds.

Looks as if today will be mainly sunny, but with significant clouds and the odd patch of rain.

Last Night 26 °C 78 °F Yesterday max. 32 °C 90 °F Yesterday Rain 0 mm ( 0 " ) Over Night Rain 2.8 mm ( 0.1 " )

Present Condition: Mostly clear with a few scattered clouds on the mainland. Thin clouds with a bit of wind in San Pedro that should pass through soon as the rain just did. Moderate easterly airflow prevailing, then later conditions will become moist and unstable. A small craft caution will go into effect tonight for gusty winds and locally rough seas near heavy showers and thunderstorms.

24hr Forecast: Sunny skies today with a few cloudy intervals. Tonight skies will be cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms will be generally isolated this afternoon. Tonight and tomorrow expect an increase in showers and thunderstorms starting at first over the south, then spreading to most areas.

Outlook: For Monday afternoon is for cloudy skies with some outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms over most areas and then a decrease in shower activity is expected by Tuesday midday.

Crown Weather:

Tropical Development Remains Possible In The Western Caribbean During The Middle & Late Parts Of This Coming Next Week: Satellite imagery today indicated that shower and thunderstorm activity continues to persist in the southwestern Caribbean. This convection is being caused by a couple of westward moving tropical waves that are progressing across the Caribbean.

I think that we could see a tropical system form near the eastern coast of Nicaragua around Wednesday into Thursday or near the northern coast of Honduras late Thursday into Friday. Based on the latest data, I think that there's about a 30-40 percent chance for tropical development around Thursday and Friday in either the Gulf of Honduras or near the coast of the eastern Yucatan Peninsula.

Additionally, there's a growing chance that this system could be a tropical storm by the time it reaches the coast of Belize or the eastern Yucatan Peninsula on Friday night or Saturday.
