If you wanted to go to one of the nicest restaurants in San Pedro, you would be going to ...........?????? I have heard Victoria House is very nice - does anyone have any suggestions?

There are so many natural things to enjoy in bze but I would not include fine dining as one of them. the culture of bze historically is not about fine dining. what you will find is a few 'foreign' owned restaurants trying to appeal to tourists interests serving food that is neither traditionally bzean nor consistent.
bzean food is good and hearty and fairly simple and has evolved from a pragmatic culture long on warmth and humanity and short on money. European influences have been primarily British untill fairly recent times (that should speak to the food issue!)
The Victoria house, however, is elegant and comes closest of the San Pedro Restaurants in my estimation.
seeking haute cuisine is best left to another vacation.

Don't let Sailor Pat put you off....he speaks with forked tongue. Too much salted meat in his diet, I think. Scurvy takes away your taste buds, I've heard.

I can assure you that Ambergris Caye has enough fine cuisine to give you a month of great eating:
Sweet Basil (I could eat there for a week straight and not get bored with their menu)
Capricorn
Victoria House
Ambergris Delight
Casa Picasso
Caliente
Papi's Diner
Jambel Jerk Pit
Rendezvous
BC's Sunday Barbeque
Not to mention the great little local takeouts in Central Park...
and there are many more worthy of mention but I have a brain freeze and can't think of them right now.

A million thanks - that is exactly what I was hoping for - I intend to enjoy both the basic Bezelian fare as well as enjoy a nice night out and you provided both. Thankyou

the watiters were funny & nice, and the meal was very good. the "islander" drink will knock your sox off.

on second thought...Mata Chica comes very close to the standard of fine dining. It is, however, all in ones definition of "fine dining" as many define this differently as we have seen from the posts.
Traditional elegance is most probable at Mata Chica, with Victoria House a distant second if you are literally interested in fine dining.
Most restaurants cook substantial food as do restaurants in many places.

Question about dining... All the restaurant menu items sound so fattening. Is everything fried or under a sauce in San Pedro? Are there any restaurants that serve grilled seafood or chicken with steamed veggies and salads? I'm thinking we're going to have to eat in a lot. We just don't eat like that, even on vacation. TIA. You will find out that most all restaurants will grill a lot....I think we only ate a couple of meals that were fried, and may I add that they were delicous.........But then again I wasn't watching my waistline...

We will be arriving in AC Sunday night after being at Banana Bank Lodge for a day and a half. What time does the BC Barbecue start. We are going to be exhausted but I hear it is worth going to so we want to try to make it. Also, where is it?
