The Caribbean Sea

There are three tropical waves in the Atlantic, and one in the Caribbean.

Moderate to fresh trade winds are pulsing off the coast of Colombia and Venezuela. Elsewhere, a relatively weak pressure pattern is resulting in gentle to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas across the basin. Outside of the convection already described north of Panama, there is no significant convection across the basin.

For the forecast, little change in winds and seas through early next week. A weak cold front will stall near the Yucatan Channel Sat through Sun night and dissipate by late Mon.

A hurricane plane flew over Tropical Storm Karl, the report indicates that the cyclonic system has strengthened slightly by increasing its wind speeds to 60 miles per hour.

Although the phenomenon is located over warm waters, winds in the higher levels of the atmosphere will limit its development. Moderate wind shear is estimated to linger over the next few days and be the limiting factor in preventing Karl from evolving into a hurricane.

Also the NHC has begun to watch an area of disturbance south of the Cape Verde Islands with a 20% chance over the next 5 days.

Meteorologists will be watching the zone from the Caribbean to the north-central Atlantic during the latter part of October. At least part of this region is usually a hot spot for tropical activity during the latter portion of the hurricane season.

Wind shear is likely to be too strong to allow development from the Gulf to much of the Caribbean and southwestern Atlantic from later this week and into part of next week. However, wind shear may back off in this zone later in the month. Where moisture gathers, there is the potential for a tropical system to brew.

Long-range forecasters indicate that there continues to be some indication of a mid-ocean system that may form later this month over the north Atlantic, perhaps near the Azores as well.

That storm is still hovering around in the Gulf and high level SW winds are still carrying away much of its cloud tops, but it is now throwing very significant cloud out our way, some of that cloud is already starting to reach northern parts of Belize.

Looks as if today will be largely sunny, but with clouds developing and high level cloud in the north from the NW, which might cause some rain this afternoon.
