Paved streets are coming to San Pedro Town. It was a manifesto commitment of the current P.U.P. administration, headed by Mayor Wally Nunez and his team. For quite some time, residential communities have been clamouring for better streets - many consist of huge potholes and were not only an eyesore to residents, but inconvenient to drivers. Well, the council is soon to complete a plan that will see much needed upgrades done on most streets in these residential neighbourhoods. Mayor Nunez tells us more.

Wally Nunez, Mayor, San Pedro Town

"When we got into office, I don't want to sound political here, but when we got into office the entire town was in dire need of repairs in every residential area here on the island. And it was a tough task because we were limited with resources, limited with equipment and it was a difficult task, but nonetheless we decided that we have to get the work done so we sought help from partners in government and we got most of our roads fixed and that's how we started the project with the bridge, projects with the rehabilitation of all these residential areas. We started with the main roads leading to all these areas and then from there we branched off to smaller roads. I know when we were in one area, people in another area were saying when are you coming to my area and it has been quite tough because you are trying to please everybody. Now, we are planning on doing a project where we want to pave most of these residential areas, starting with the main streets and then from there we want to branch off. But we want to plan everything with proper drainage and to have these areas paved in the areas that are mostly affected by the floods and having areas that are mostly traversed by our residents."

Funding for this project is expected through the floating of a municipal bond with support from central government, B.W.S.L. and Area Representative Andre Perez. Mayor Nunez says that the estimated cost of the project is ten to twelve million dollars.
