The first wave of sargassum has landed and all indications are that it will be a busy season. Residents are advised that the San Pedro Town Council is setting up a sargassum barrier between the Mayan Princess beach access and the municipal pier.

The barrier is a temporary structure that is based on traditional fishing practices. It will guide the sargassum to designated areas for easier pick-up. We ask for patience and understanding as the team works to safeguard our beaches, for the enjoyment of all.

The temporary barrier is part of the sargassum response plan and we are consulting with leaders across the island to improve the seasonal management of sargassum. Sargassum is everybody's business.

San Pedro Town Council:

The sargassum barrier is working as designed. The plan is to allow nature to create converging areas where the sargassum can be picked up and taken away using low impact means. The beach is protected and the marine life has greater access to clear water.

The sargassum situation is a lot bigger but the San Pedro Town Council is in full response mode. We will be implementing additional strategies to keep the sargassum in check.

We also remind the public that structures placed in the seabed require environmental clearance. We are working along with the relevant authorities to ensure that the sargassum barrier serves as a viable option for the emergency response plan. All public input is important to this process.
