I buy cuban cigars in Belize City from Jay at Crystay Auto Rental. I've never seen him without a cigar in his mouth. He has Cohiba's and Monticristo's (very fresh). The last time I was there ( Oct 2001 ) I bought 25 MC's for US $125 They were shrink wrapped. You can get them in a box, but it's more expensive and the box would be a hassle to bring home.I took the labels off and mailed them to myself at home.If a customs official asked about them (which they didn't)my reply would have been "They're Honduran"

They ARE illegal to bring into the US. People have smuggled them in (via Canada and other places). Remember, customs will know where you have been while out of the country. They can check your passport for verification. Also, they'll know the questions to ask to see if you know what you're talking about. I'm not sure what the fines are for getting caught (besides the costs of the cigars). It's a great way to ruin the end of your vacation. If your not concerned about breaking the law (where is that tax evasion post when you need it) go for it, but you've been warned.
Just my 2 cents. Nate

and the worst that would happen is the cigars get confiscated.

Not true, you can also get fined for the amount of the duty or 100% value of the cigars. Most of the time it depends on how many boxes you have. This is the case as of 2 years ago. Maybe they have changed the law, but I doubt it as dumb the laws concerning Cuban goods go.

Sure, the fines are on the books, but no one with any common sense will pay them.
When, and IF, they send you the fine letter, all one need do is request an appeals hearing. All you need do is file such request and guess what - the problem goes away. There is NO procedure in place to "hear" an appeal nor any "judges" or any other mechanism to enforce the fine....true for "illegal travel" to Cuba as well.
Having sent over 300 people to Cuba legally in the past 3 years, I know from where I speak.

I have brought back Cuban cigars from Mexico, Aruba, Grand Cayman etc. Not a problem. I also order them via the internet via Spain or Sweden. No problems! I would think that after 9/11 customs has more valid concerns, than if a cigar was rolled in Cuba or Honduras! Where would you suggest purchasing Cigars in AC?
Thanks, Scott

AZ... Being a cigar lover, I would LOVE to find out where you are buying Cubans on the net. Have not had a good Cuban since I lived in Sao Paulo several years ago. Please email me the web site address... Thanks, BBNX [email protected]

Uh hem...wink, wink...
I don't smoke cigars but if I knew someone that did I might purchase them at a little shop on Middle Street called Traveler's Liquors. I'd remove the rings and hide them separately of the cigars. We live in an arid climate and would probably place them in plastic immediately. I'd probably stash them in the heel pockets of my scuba fins which are stowed in a locked attachment to my huge dive bag.
But that's just how I might do it.
