Whats up with all the talk of grass in the ocean? I've been to different parts of the Carribean and never heard or seen the likes.
Does anyone know if there are better parts than other (ie: north or south of San Pedro).

The further south you go, I thought that there was less sea grass.

On Ambergris Caye....the farther North you go...the less grass. Except for the area of Habaneros...lots of grass there.

Most resorts have cleared out areas at the ends of their docks and have stairs into the water so you can swim in grass free areas.

Some have even put in artificial reef under their docks for marine life to live in.

Hope this helps!

what is this obsession with sea grass? It's GRASS, for God's sake. You know....little green leaves.
I just don't get why someone is afraid to swim over grass. What do you think is hiding in there?
Or do you prefer those little grains of sand that they have in Cancun...it gets inside your bathing suit in all kinds of places and you can't get the damn stuff off.
The water is gorgeous and the grass doesn't bite.
Come on down!

When you swim, you should only occupy about the top foot of the water, who cares what is on the bottom.
Seriously, tho, it's just a little turtle grass. It's pretty, no mud like in a lake, and it isn't slimy. Take a look at some of the pics posted from shark-ray alley. That's what it is.

It might be "just grass", but a lot of people don't care to swim in it.

I don't mind snorkeling over it...but if I have to wade through it or stand in it....I don't care for it either. I prefer to SEE what I'm stepping on....for a lot of reasons.

1)We do have stingrays here and even the small baby ones like to play in the grass.
2)Ever step on a conch shell barefoot??? Nuff said.
3)The sand that turtle grass grows in is NOT very solid...it IS mushy...and you sink most of the time.
4)(and this be the biggest reason) Do you have any idea how many people here like to throw crap in the water?...including bottles????...including old wood?....maybe with nails? Have you seen the debris on the beaches that washes in over the reef thanks to the careless cargo ships that like to dump garbage overboard??

Hate to put a damper on things but I like nice clean sand to step on. This is why a lot of resorts have cleared out spots to swim...for folks like me and others who feel the same way.

OK, I was presupposing "swim" meant propelling oneself through the water, versus frolicking in the same water with ones feet down (like, non-swimming). I agree, don't like surprises (most of the time).

Sandshaker, thanks for the reality check, others appear to be able to fly over the water to get to sandy bottom. Do you know of any areas along AC that has a sandy bottom, some of us like to "frolick".
