US Airways has been in Chapter 11 for several months ... before they inaugurated their Belize service. Their plan is to reorganize, not to liquidate, and some experts believe they will have done so successfully (i.e. "gotten out of bankruptcy") by the first half of next year. Although there is never a guarantee, this is probably a ticket you are safe to hold onto.

If the U.S. does go to war with Iraq, I think we can expect several other U.S. carriers to go into Chapter 11 or even Chapter 7.

And quite a few Belize hotels and tourism operators that are teetering on the brink now will probably close their doors, too.

Oh NO! I have not heard of any of this - I have been so busy with other things to notice. I am supposed to be traveling to Belize Jan. 13 and leaving Jan. 20th. should I cancel my trip? Or should I just get travelers insurance?

Remember there are a couple of different types of bankruptcy (reorginization and liquidation) and that the US government will step in when a too important business is about to fail. Some smaller airlines might disappear from time to time, but the big ones will continue to operate even if they go through a bankruptcy or three. The gov will step in with tax payers dollars to keep them going if they can't come to terms with the banks they owe money to.

Of course, they will be forced cut costs as much as possible and that means axing the less profitable and nonessential flights. I have no idea of how profitable the Belize flights are or whether anybody feels they are a neccessity.

I guess what I am trying to say is don't panic. Odds are good in the case of a large airline going bankrupt that your flight will still happen and if it doesn't you will likely get a refund. If you are still concerned, call the airlines.

I have been looking for travels
insurance but because US Air is
in Bankruptcy no one will insurance
us. You can buy insurance the same day
that you purchase your ticket for about $20.00.
which I will from now on. I guess we will have to
PRAY that the airline doesn't go under.
