I know that my girls will be wanting the conchs and/or jewelry sold by children on the beach. I'm thinking that it might be a more meaningful exchange if they barter instead of a simple cash transaction. There must be items that are hard to come by on AC that are plentiful here in the US and might be appreciated as much as money (I do not want to start an international Jack and the Beanstalk incident).
Good idea or bad idea? And, what to bring???
Thanks for any help,

The only thing I can think of is CD's or tapes...I think the kids want $$ mostly. Anyone else?

we went in conch season, and some (gringo?) guys gave me 3 shells right off the beach for free. they had more. but i had to clean them myself. they are displayed lovingly on my mantle.

i think grace is right. the kids selling on the beach only wanted money "for my soccer team". they would gladly take anything you offer them for free smile . they were AMAZED by my disposable camera, and had me take pics of them, and they of me. i did not buy anything from them. aimee found some lovely beaded (cheap) jewelery at some little gift shop.

oh! i remember. they like t-shirts with US stuff on them, ie sports teams, cartoons, surfer shirts, etc. and candy, of course.

the dive guys were happy for american cigarettes, but i dont think you want your kids to see that.

Please remember that these kids are sent out by their parents to sell this stuff to bring money back home for food. Granted you hear a few stories, but mostly they are to bring the cash back to their parents or caregiver who may not appreciate a t-shirt or cd exchange and it could get those kids in a heap of trouble.

I don't want to dump junk on kids, but I was thinking of something like baby clothes that may be hard to get and sorely needed.
