Wondering if someone can recommend a place easy for someone slightly handicapped. My wife can not get around very well Any more.(M.S.and now cancer)We got remarried on AC two years a go and fell in love with the place. We`ve allways wanted to take our son back with us. I`ve it`s now or never. This will probably be our last trip together. Looking for a place close to town with a pool. Thanks for any advice.Daryl

Skully,
Just an observation....
When I first went to AC, I immediately noticed the lack of accessibility there. (My son was in a wheelchair, so I am very aware of these things). That is one thing I would love to see addressed. (Now that we have a property there, our own property is not accessible, so I know I need to start "at home").
This was also very evident when on my last trip down, I fell and dislocated my ankle. What I will tell you, is that while I can't help you with accomodation information, I will tell you that the people of AC will go out of their way to help you. This starts at the airport in BC, Maya Airline (I can't say enough good stuff about these guys), to the restaurants, to the divemasters, to the people on the streets..... simply amazing!!
So pack your stuff, and get on a plane! Enjoy your trip, and let you wife revisit Paradise!

The Hide-A-Way would not be suitable if there is a wheel chair involved as there is a flight of stairs that must be negotiated. Other than that, Joyce will take good care of you. The food is very good, entertainment weekends (depending on your version, entertainment every nite). Check the Board for other places for, price and accommadations.

No way in the world would I take a partially disabled person to the Hideaway it is patently unsuitable.Without a doubt it has to be the Sunbreeze and if you call Julia and explain your special needs. She will give you one of the best ground floor rooms with partial view of the beach/sea.
P.S. very sorry to hear about your wife's condition

As far as the Hideaway, we had a friend there that was in a wheel chair for 3 weeks, and he said he got around just fine, I'm sure that Sunbreeze is and may be better, but as Ibonle said, the island is really not hooked up for this.
Just trying to help.

You might also check out Banyan Bay if you request a downstairs unit. That would make the pool accessible and if you can get one facing the beach would be able to negotiate the chaise lounges etc. They also have a resturant on site. Would agree with Immissing The Hideaway would not be handicap friendly as far as their accomodations, but the girls are, and would help you, but think you'd do better elsewhere.

it depends on how determined & spirited she can still be.

there was a parapelegic at journey's end when we were there in 2000. i would say JE is the least handicapped-accessable place i'd seen. you have to take a boat there and it is completely on sand. every building is up 2-3 stairs. but he had people carry his chair whereever it wouldnt roll. he was very independant, and the staff couldnt bend over backwards more. i was amazed. he even got scuba certified.

he was somewhat limited in that he pretty much had to stay on the grounds. sunbreeze may be a good choice.

if you want to, you will.
