I've done this trip a few times. Your only real option is to take the ferry to Playa del Carmen (about an hour, maybe US$12) and then the take a taxi (US$3 or so) to the new ADO bus termina. Then ADO bus to Chetumal (4 1/4 hours, US$16). Then transfer to a Novelo's bus into Corozal Town (1 hour including border crossing, US$2). Your luggage should be no problem as the ferry and bus people can help with it. From there you can fly non-stop to San Pedro (US$35, 25 minutes) or take the Thunderbolt ferry, 1 1/2 hours, US$20).

The way I have done it is
Cozumel-Cancun
Taxi to bus station
Cancun-Chetumal (by first class bus)
Chetumal-Corozal by Taxi(Henry Menzies of Corozal)
Fly corozal-San Pedro.
Book ticket to Tampa from Travel and Tour S.P.
No problem

I guess I don't see the point in going to Cancun from Coz. It makes for a longer and considerably more expensive trip.

A couple of dollars more (big deal)and I did say it is the way I have done it - stayed downtown had a great evening in the old town of Cancun(very cheap)and made it without problems to SP in one day.

There's no reason to go to Cancun because the bus just comes back and stops in Playa. If there is an express bus, then it doesn't leave as frequent as the other buses (which means you are more likely to miss a connection). I've made the trip in Aug. and again in Nov. I have pics of the schedules posted in the terminals.
The only other option I might suggest to make things easier (which I did the 2nd time) is to hire a driver ($30) that pics you up at the bus station in Chetumal and takes you to the airport in Corozal. It's faster and you don't have to get on the bus (which is the school bus type unlike the premier buses in Mexico). Especially if you have a few bags or large ones (you do have to get off and walk through customs and then get back on to find more people on the bus and less space).
I have more details if interested.

I ws corrected on the cost of the ferry to PDC. Checked my ticket receipt of a few weeks ago and it was 80 pesos, about US$8 or 8.50 (depending on the exchange rate), not the US$12 figure I gave.
