From the Chamber of Commerce:

Message from Ali Campbell:

Nurse Natalie called me at 2:30 this afternoon with the information that Tex
and Judith Nunez's five year old, hydrocephalic son, Andrew, will be
operated on this Friday, January 31st at Medical Associates in Belize City.
The surgery, to replace the shunt in his head which broke just before the
Christmas holidays, will cost approximately $6000 Bze. Without surgery,
Andrew will suffer increasing seizures and is at risk from brain
damage by the broken shunt.

I called Melissa at Atlantic Bank, Tex is the security guard there, and they
will open an account where donations can be made to help pay for the

Natalie, as President of the NAC NW, will be at the bank tomorrow,
Wednesday, January 29th at 12:30 p.m. to open the account.

If any of you as representatives of an organization, or to lend credibility
to the
cause, could also be present as sponsors or publicize the
donation drive it would be greatly appreciated. It should take only a few
minutes of your time.

This is a: "No bbq, no cakewalk! Just send your generous check to Andrew
Nunez, c/o of Atlantic Bank, San Pedro Town" campaign.

Nurse Natalie Palen opened a Jr Savings account at Atlantic Bank Wednesday,
January 29th for
Andrew A. Nunez, the five year old son of Judith and Tex Nunez. Andrew, a
rather shy, happy
boy has hydrocephalus. He was diagnosed with a broken shunt just before the

Dr. Valle of Medical Associates in Belize City plans to replace the broken
shunt in Andrew's
head this Saturday if the device arrives as scheduled on Friday. For the
last two years a shunt has
provided nearly total relief from the frequent, life threatening seizures
that had plagued Andrew
from birth.

The Nunez family - Tex is a security guard at Atlantic Bank in San Pedro and
Judith works
across the street at St. Luke's - did not request financial assistance, but
the knowledge that this
community is choosing to support them during the course of Andrew's
difficult surgery is an
immense comfort.

Donations are requested to defray the expenses of surgery and follow up care
for Andrew. Please
stop by Atlantic Bank, or send your check to

Ms. Melissa Cuellar, Supervisor
Atlantic Bank
P O Box 58
San Pedro Town
BELIZE, Cent. Am.

Checks can be made out to Andrew A. Nunez. The account is #210586178. The
signatories are
Natalie Palen and Judith Nunez.

Please forward this email to any one who might be interested in helping out.

Then send a check and a prayer.

Additional information on Hydrocephalus.

"Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by the accumulation of
cerebrospinal fluid in the
brain. This results in pressure on the tissues of the brain. The causes of
hydrocephalus are not
well understood.

"The most common surgery for the treatment of hydrocephalus is the insertion
of a shunt - a
flexible but sturdy silastic tube, with a catheter, and a valve - inside the
brain to divert fluid into
the abdominal cavity where it is safely absorbed into the blood stream. The
procedure is
essentially the same regardless of the size and age of the patient.

"Shunt systems are not perfect devices. Complications may include mechanical
infections, obstructions, and the need to lengthen or replace the catheter.
Generally, shunt
systems require monitoring and regular medical follow up. When complications
do occur,
usually the shunt system will require some type of revision.

'The prognosis for patients diagnosed with hydrocephalus is difficult to
predict. Many children
diagnosed with the disorder benefit from rehabilitation therapies and
educational interventions,
and go on to lead normal lives with few limitations."

My son also was hydrocephalic. He had a shunt inserted when he was only 3 days old. The life span of the shunts can be very long, however, they are at extreme risk of infection. Chey had 5 shunts in his first 2 month, then didn't have another problem in his 16 years.
My heart goes out to his family and this child, as well as my $$$.
Thanks for passing this on Marty.
