been experimenting with pop up killers. some folks have been having x rated
popups just appear when their browser isn't even running. today a lady walked
into our office and there was a detailed acrobatic one up right then.
whoops. so we got a mission to figure these things out and kill them.

here's the best freebie i've seen so far
a piece of software called spybot goes thru ones system and pulls out
anything resembling popup software. a lot of the popup stuff runs
transparently, even sending info back to the company detailing ones browsing
patterns. after running spybot, i went from mass popups all the time to
basically none. i say basically cause its been several hours and i haven't
gotten one yet. normally i would have a bazillion during that period. my son
runs a lot of music downloading software, and one called gator is one of the
WORST. I had about 40 gator pieces in my system. totaled 450+ various
pieces of popup software.

Thanks Marty Mon! I hate those annoying pop ups! Not to be confused with Pop Tarts which are a breakfast delicacy.

By the way thanks for the site and all your work, treats and tips. The thanks isn't always expressed but know you are greatly appreciated.

Spybot is great but it won't get rid of all pop-ups. Spybot cleans scumware off of your computer. Scumware is software that is installed without your consent and spews advertising at you. However not all pop-ups come from scumware. Some come from just going to a particular web site.

To prevent getting scumware in the first place you can tighten up the security settings on your browser. To prevent other type of pop-ups, you can switch to another browser that has a pop-up disable option or run your browser through a secondary program that will kill pop-ups. I believe Microsoft was/is considering adding the disable pop-up feature to their browser, but I don't when or if it is going to happen.

very true, it will not eliminate all pop ups, but it sure killed 99% of mine. my machine was riddled with scumware, brought on by by son installing many types of music downloading software.

Marty, I run SpyBot and I know it’s a killer app.

You mentioned that your son D/L music or what ever else on p2p sharing programs, might I suggest ‘kazaalite’ it comes bare bones, NO spyware, NO pop-ups, just a solid p2p file sharing app. I have version 2.0.2 and will not upgrade or change unless absolute necessary. They are looking for a donation but it is not necessary to DL the program.

If I’m not mistaken Gator comes bundled with I-Mesh p2p, I suggest, junk it (uninstall) , clean the register, then live a happier life.

Sorry, don’t use that hyper-link from this page, it takes you to garbage at least in my browser. Just do a search for ‘kazzalite’
