One good thing about being snowed in, I've had the chance to explore this site more thoroughly, it is impressive. I have always tried to find the Southern Cross, never knew for sure if I had or not. The San Pedro Sun had an article detailing exactly where in the night sky to look. The whole article was interesting, but here is the best part:

"To find the Southern Cross you step out on the beach or a pier (the farther away from lights the better the view). More or less you look towards Victoria House or Belize City and then a bit up from the horizon. Let your eyes rest on the brightest star "Conapus", keep your eyes there. Look towards the left and up a bit. There you will see, among others, four stars forming a big cross tilting a bit left. This is called the "False Cross". Keeping your eyes steadily there look again to your left a bit more and down a bit towards the horizon. There will be two bright stars flanked on either side with two fainter ones forming a smaller cross. This is the famous Southern Cross."

I think one of the biggest thrills on my first trip to A.C was seeing the Southern Cross. I'd stand in the shadow of a tree and just gaze up at it.
Don't see anything like that up here in Oregon!

Can you see it year round? We will be down there in May and I'd love to see the Southern Cross. Any idea what time of year that article was from?

I think there might be better times of the year to view than others, just as with all celestial bodies, but I am not sure. May 3rd is mentioned, so May might be one of those optimum times. http://sanpedrosun.net/old/99-193.html

We were in San Pedro in mid-April last year and were very surprised and impressed to be able to see the Southern Cross near the southeast horizon. Take a few minutes and visit the pier at Caribbean Villas - what a sight on a clear night! The night guard at CV was also a wealth of information about the stars and told us that the SC was only visible from mid-April until early May each year. He is a wonderful and generous source of all kinds of information about Belize in general and AC in particular. An hour or two visiting with him would be worthwhile for anyone who is interested in knowing more about the people and places they are visiting.

BankerWoman,

Sorry, but Henry is no longer in the security guard business. He moved on to other things shortly after your trip. Boy, could he talk and talk and talk.
