Is it best to exchange US dollars for Belize dollars? Is there an ATM on AC? Is there one at the Belize City airport? Should I just bring a lot of cash and pay that way instead of with credit cards? Any info would be appreciated!

hey anniegirl, my husband and i were just there in January (first time) we found exchanging money is easy, so dont worry about that, most merchants or all that we did business took US$ anyway, you should problably read, on down a few posts back "credit card fraud",(very important info from "wendy and bywarren") do what you feel comfortable with, but as i state in that post we will take cash or travelers checks from now on, and let me also say that means NO MATTER WHERE WE GO, not just to AC, and as also stated earlier we CAN'T wait to go back!!!!!

You can exchange money at one of the money exchanges on front street in town. Official rate there is 2.05$BZ per 1$US - you can ask for 2.08-2.10$Bz and possibly get it. The more cash or travelers' checks you take and convert, the more little edge you get by exchanging. Personally I think you come out ahead and take less risks with travelers' checks than credit cards. Recommend you keep the bulk of your tc/cash in a hotel safe and carry just what you need each day. Only ATM's we have ever seen in country were only for bank account holders in Belize; unless someone has updated info, recommend you plan not to be able to use Belize ATM's for US cards. Happy trip...
