First time visitor to AC. FAmily with 3 kids. How are the restaurants. I have heard it is good to bring some food (basic staples) to keep in the rooms. Is the meat and fish readily available in San Pedro ?

I would like to know that as well as we will be a first timer to AC and staying at the Mayan Princess. I was not aware they had restaurants at the Mayan PRincess. Thanks for asking this question.

No restaurants in the Princess but in the immediate area.

Many good restaurants very close to Mayan Princess. Especially Mannelley's ice cream shop, the best.

Plenty of fresh fish and chicken available.

The grocery stores have everything, just alittle pricey, by US standards. Someone has to pay for the transportation of these items to an island.

We gathered fresh bread pudding cinnamon bread and pastries from La Popular bakery and Rubies daily.

Also got fresh fruit from the street stands.
With all the good bakery and ice cream daily, we did not have a taste for US packaged snacks.
The two boys are very picky eaters at home, but loved all they ordered in San Pedro.

We had 3 kids with us last year, we took alot of snack type of food with us, but had alot of it left over after 14 days. The restaurant food was so good, the kids ate all they ordered, and did not find the need to snack. The kids loved all the selections of seafood dishes. Not that pricey either.

Refrigerator is good to keep all the beverages they will consume, remember it is hot on the beach.

Thanks for the info. How did you find the beach at Mayan....suitable for swimming and snorkeling? Or, would you travel to other areas to swim and lounge. What did your kids do for fun. What activities would you suggest. Our boys are 13 & 14, daughter is 8.

We did not stay at Mayan, but I know it well.
Our kids were alittle older, youngest was 13.
Find a spot on the beach w/o seawall and just enjoy swimming. Or walk north down the beach to the park area, nice wadding and swimming from the beach. Saw some large star fish. The local little kids were making sand torilla's on the benches.
We snorkeled with a guide several times, at Hol Chan and Shark Ray alley, and Mexico Rocks. After
the kids are tired out, for several hours.

Best was our trips way north with a guide and boat, to fish and just hang out on the beach, watching all the sea life in the shallow ponds, taking our lunch with us. They voted 3 times to do that trip. Leaving about 9 am returning near sunset.

In town the boys loved the video game rooms in the afternoon and evenings. Two on front street one is in Mannalley's.

One day a trip to Caye Caulker to kick around.

Touring the island two half days on a rented golf cart.

Played some volley ball.

They hooked up with a couple local younger kids, that they enjoyed chatting and playing video games with, and we took them to eat with us a few times. Sharing life on the island and US.

Great fun, take good strong flash lights, and walk the piers at night, spotting all kinds of sea life in the water. Amazing what you can see at night off the piers.

Twice down to Barefoot's water park for kids which is a good long walk south.

If your kids love water, they will be happy.

Don't worry about the cost each night for the boys in the Video gamerooms, it will be less than an adult bar

We adults would sit in Fido's, and the boys would go to the gamerooms, checking in with us when they left one gameroom to go to the other.

You must give them the speech "Just say NO", cause they might be approached to buy weed, on the street.

Right next door to the Mayan Princess is Fido's.
Fido's is the best place to wine/belikin, dine, and relax. You're right on the beach and you can watch the waves and beautiful scenery as you wind down. You'll have a great time!
