Two weeks prior to going to Belize, I had the respiratory flu, the day before we left I came down with the intenstional/stomach flu. After we got home, two days later, I had more intestional flu. You try to figure it.

It's everywhere and I had my flu shot, as I do each year.

I have no idea what strain it is, just coincidental was what I called it. frown

BUT, I had a good time in between. Nothing stopped me. smile

What kind of bouts with the flu are you having? I was there at approx the same time as you were.

This was the first trip (6 times in 2 1/2 years) that I ever had tummy problems down there and I had no way of knowing if it was something I ate, a bug or alcohol induced. :^)

A day or so before I returned, I got a sore throat which never amounted to anything but lasted around a week and I still have slightly swollen glands. Nothing too serious, all in all.

Keep in mind that dengue fever (non-hemorraghic version) has symptoms similar to flu -- nausea, headache, fever, along with joint ache. Like the flu, there's not much to do for it except rest and treat the symptoms (use Tylenol not aspirin to avoid internal bleeding.)

Lets don't blame it on Belize, I went to Belize for for New Years, had the intestinal flu and the other brand both before I went, lots of it going around, took the flu shot too. Lots of this happening but not because of a trip to Belize. Go again soon and don't worry about the flu. KB smile G

Surely was not blaming the Flu on you, haaaa, wish I was back in Belize getting some sun, winter what we call winter anyway is hanging on way toooo long here in South Alabama. Normally by this time of the year we are going to the panhandle of Fl some 2.5 hrs away for saturdays at the beach. It is not Belize but we can dream.

I'm bringing this back up because I'm curious about something.

Last time I was down there, I had a sore throat just a day or two before I came home. About 14 days later, I came down with a bad itchy rash on my hands and feet and my mouth swelled up a bit too for the first day. Two doctors say it was caused by a virus, not an allergy. Nothing serious.

Still, it leaves me wondering if the virus was something I caught down there. Anyone else having these symptoms? Either those that live there now or those that have recently returned?

I will bet all of you have one thing in common...you got to Belize on an AIRPLANE! Airplanes are full of nasty little microbes, bacteria and virii that circulate from passenger to passenger because they recirculate the same air all over the plane (they could circulate more air but they don't like to do it because it costs money.)
Flying is a high risk activity when it comes to catching things. In all likelihood, you caught the bugs on the planes, not in Belize.

Just wondering if there is anything one can do to avoid all that exposure to germs on the airplane. Does use of a surgical mask help, or does it just make me look like an idiot and keep my own germs to myself? How about use of antiseptic wipes? Normally I am not this paranoid, but this deadly viral pneumonia from Asia has me concerned. Afterall a bunch of people over there became sick from exposure to an infected person on an elevator.
