The news did not exactly come as
a surprise, but today's
announcement by Air Jamaica that
it will suspend its service to
Belize is the first hint of
negativity in a year that has thus
far seen nothing but positive
trends in the tourism industry.
The last Air Jamaica flight will depart the P.G.I.A. on
June first. Since inaugurating four times a week
service on November twenty-first of last year, the
passenger load never did reach critical mass. The
Belize City-Montego Bay flight could not survive on its
own and was always intended as a feeder for Air
Jamaica's longer and more lucrative tourist routes to
and from North America, particularly the heavily
populated east coast of the United States. The plan
was a good one, but it ran head on into a similar
strategy implemented by U.S. Air, using its Charlotte,
North Carolina hub to funnel passengers from those
same east coast cities to Belize. In the end only one
airline could survive and, in today's depressed market
for international air travel, it was Air Jamaica that
decided to bail out. Ironically, the silver lining for Air

Jamaica's departure is that the remaining carriers:
U.S. Air, American, Continental and TACA, should see
their business solidify and be in a better position to
add capacity for improved long term service to Belize.
In the end the only real losers will be those travellers
who, for the first time, could visit Jamaica and the
rest of the Caribbean without having to endure the
time, expense and visa requirements of passing
through Miami.

Yep, agreed. Miami airport is a major pain in the butt and I could do without ever returning to it!

That bites.. I could use my Delta miles on Air Jamaica! Not suprised though as our Montego-BZE flight was pretty empty and they cancelled our Tues flight back to Montego so put us on American via Miami back to Atlanta. Hey, maybe Delta will get its butt in gear and start flying there finally! A direct flight from Atlanta to BZE would be awesome!

I suppose I dodged a bullet... I nearly booked Air Jamaica for my July trip to AC, until I got a cheaper fare on AA thru a consolidator. I'll second the Delta comment; any established carrier that wishes to add flights to give AA some competition in the Caribbean is OK by me smile

What's amazing to me is how few options there are to fly via Fort Lauderdale. I will duly report my MIA experience  once I'm back ... it's been years since I flew from there ...

PS I guess this means my MIA <==> BZE flights will be full frown

I'll tell you, be ready for major construction detours going on at the Miami airport, especially the transit from domestic to international terminals, also on the return, the custom/security thing requires several queues to claim bags, declarations, inpections and getting to the gate for domestic departures.
Going out things aren't so bad because of the anticipation.....seems coming back, things are more aggravating.

If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before.

Appreciate the headsup, dogmatic. Things ought to be (somewhat) easier as I'm driving to MIA. I'll just have the parking lot van drop me at the international terminal...

I go by the dang place all the time for work, but *never* have to go in... I've read about how the $300M is it? they're spending on MIA will solve none of their logistic / passenger convenience problems. It's the classic Miami approach to doing things...

I'll just have to remember to go to my happy place when the s&!% hits the fan laugh

You will just have to stay in Belize longer to make up for the aggravation.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

Yep, Dog is right. I just went through Miami 2 weeks ago on my way to and from Jamaica. The place is torn up, long lines, searches like crazy. Be early and patient!
