Are they actually doing an evacuation of "non-essential" people in san pedro? How is "essential" defined?

I think what that means is they are trying to get the tourists home. And anyone else who wants to go is going into Belize City for many different reasons; electricity, phone, food, etc. I talked to my boyfriend and he was actually transporting people at the time, to the mainland. No one's frantically being evacuated off the island. It's all becoming more organized and things are getting done.

Another thing I forgot to mention is they are taking a bunch of kids too. I'm not sure where they are taking them exactly, but I think the reasoning is they(the kids) are needing certain things and they will probably get in the way during the clean-up of the island, and that is not meant to be rude. I hope you know what I mean.

they just want to get unessential people off the island to reduce the support load.

sounds crass i guess, but that about sums it up.

It makes sense that children not be subjected to that sort of situation if at all possible. I don't have kids, like them, but they do tend to get in the way when there is hard work to be done, bless their little hearts.

I think getting children off the island, if they have relatives they can stay with, is a great idea. Not only will they be somewhat in the way...but they can get hurt in these conditions. Plus they do have other needs that would be hard to meet on the island for a couple of weeks or more. Give grownups a chance to get the work done!
