Seashell- Have you ever stayed at Portofino/looked at their rooms -used their hot tub or eaten at their restaurant-I would have to say the answer is probably no but surprise me.

Peter, does Portofino have a swimming pool? Yes or no?

Regardless of whether or not Portofino has a pool, do you recommend it to 17 year old boys (Wes) and his buddies that are on a budget? Go ahead, surprise me.

Wes may be young, but its possible he may have the street smarts of a 30-something year-old guy from Boston.

I would not recommend Portofino as a place for young single guys. Too far, too quiet. I've been there. Nice for couples, honeymoons, singles wanting to be alone, etc.

Also, that spot by BYC/Playador is notorious for problems. Whatever happened to the "lights for Anne Riley" (I think that was her name) project a few years back that was focusing on this stretch of beach?

Last week I was hanging out on Amigos dock in between dives when I overheard some folks talking about an attempted robbery at gun point the night before. Apparently there was a scuffle, but no one was seriously injured, and the scumbag was apprehended. I could hardly believe I was hearing this story on AC. This was my 1st trip back in 5 years, but just 5 short years ago this kind of thing was almost unheard of, now several incidents
in 1 week. Sad.

Zoe, while reading your message above the thought popped into my mind.... We all know how run down some things are on the island, and you are right about the police station.

If, and this is a big "if" all of the resorts on AC asked their guests to write a letter to the minister of tourism complaining about the lack of police, equipments, etc. and the tourism dept. received thousands of letters...all saying basically the same thing, "get it taken care of or we'll not be back" just maybe they might get something done. Shrug.

Something definitely needs to be done. I noticed that police station on caulker was bigger and nicer (although not by much) than the station on AC. It makes me wonder how much money is spent on training officers as well.

If you've never been to either of these police stations, you should definitely stop by and take a look inside. eek

FYI they are currently building a new police station in conjunction with the fire station. This is a step in the right direction although I contend that the major problem is there are too many people that are unwilling to recognize the seriousness of the problem. This is evident when you read the comments on this board about how "safe" AC is until actual incidents are brought up.
I would suggest to those who bend over and stick their head in the sand to avoid facing the problem that they keep in mind where their ass is when they do that. wink

Hey Waterworld, I wanna live somewhere they catch 95% of the criminals within 72 hours. Sounds like a 60 minutes story that will never air...and by the way, is the punishment Bubba or jail time?
