We just got back from Belize. As far as we can tell, Continental, TACA, and American are the only three airlines that have international flight (and ticket counter) at the airport. We were originally sceduled to come back to the states on Tuesday Oct 3rd on Continental. No flights ever made it to Belize eventhough the airport was open and the weather was clear and calm. In fact, Continental refused to increase the number of flights into Belize on Wednesday oct. 4th, citing financial reasons, to help evacuate people out of Belize. Despite pleas from 100's of people and phone calls from their family members in the US to the airline, Continental maintains an indifferent attitude towards evacuating the people left stranded in Belize. Even in the state of emergency, Continental refused to help because of how it will impact their pocket book.
We were one of the lucky ones who manage to purchase tickets on TACA air and returned home yesterday but many are left stranded until Friday or Saturday. While other airlines, TACA and American, had no trouble getting their ticketed passengers out of a disaster area, I am still at a loss as to why Continental offer no assistance.
You may want to think twice before you fly with Continental on your next flight.
