Travelling to Ambergris Caye in February for two weeks.

I am considering three different dive ops and would like to know whether or not it is necessary to *book ahead* to be sure I can dive when I arrive, or whether it would be OK to wait until I arrive so I can check them out before I sign up.

My advice is not to book ahead-and spend your first afternoon looking and seeing which dive op suits your needs etc.

I agree as well. There are many great diving ops along the beachfront...all of the dive sites are close by on the barrier reef...if you are an advanced diver it may be worth your time to take a trip to the Blue Hole...long boat ride, short dive, but the trip to nearby Half Moon Caye is worth it!

Despite the fabulous followup dives and lunch interval at Halfmoon Caye, I do not recommend the Blue Hole dive to beginner divers. Therefore, if you have new or beginner divers in your group, they should snorkel the hole and not dive it.

If you have new/beginner divers in your group and decide to go to the Atolls for dives, try to do a
number of dives just off of San Pedro before your big day.

You've had some good advice. I would suggest you check some of the listings on this board to see who is offering what.

Almost any dive operator will pick you up at your resort but I like to use one that is relatively close by.

Where are you planning to stay?

Sometimes package deals work well, other times it works better to book separately.

However, if you book a package, you can sometimes realize substantial savings. If you are going to be doing 10 dives anyway, what's the harm?

When you are going around to the operators, and trying to pick the one you like, I am not suggesting that you must commit to the package. Just ask if you will get a discount if you do a certain number of dives with the operator. It is likely that you will be told that you'll get a 15-20% reduction on the overall price if you do 10 or more dives with the same operator. Since you want to go out to the Atolls, as well, that could be a fair chunk of change.
