Anybody you know using BTL's DSL internet in Belize yet? Current pricing for 128K up/256K down DSL appears to be US$150 per month; 256K up/512K down is US$200 a month. Slower DSL starts at US$50 a month. Installation for any DSL is US$100.
Since (in theory) DSL is on 24/7 and you can use the internet and your voice phone at the same time, even at these high prices it looks like DSL would be the way to go for businesses at least.
I believe Starband and Direcway satellite in Belize is in the US$800 to $2,000 range (though installation costs should be coming down) with monthly fees for unlimited two-way service of around US$60. Plus you have the problem of latency and lack of reception in heavy cloud cover.
Here in the U.S., I pay US$40 a month for 512K DSL with free modem and free self-install.
BTL ran a very nice 1/2 page ad. in the Ambergris newspapers advertising their DSL service. This was in June. When I called the BTL office to find out when it would be available I was told it would be installed in Belize City first and San Pedro would be second with installations starting in August. This then changed to October. October has now changed to January 2004.
In Belize City a cable TV company has done some cable Internet installations but there is no sign that there will be such competition for BTL here on Ambergris Caye. So, they can afford to delay things.
