San Pedro hit with 4 hour blackout
While one utility was being granted a rate hike, another
was
struggling to provide service to one of its biggest
customers.
At eight twenty-five this morning the entire island of
Ambergris Caye lost its electricity supply and power was
not
restored until over four hours later. According to a
press
release from Belize Electricity Limited, the blackout
was
caused when corrosion on system protection cables caused
a fault on the high power transformer at the San Pedro
substation. B.E.L. says it is in the process of
reviewing its
policy of preventive maintenance to prevent a similar
problem in the futur

Power went out countrywide at about 7:30 am and did not come back on until 12 hours later. No running water either since some genius tore down all the towns water towers and replaced them with electric pumps.
