As I mentioned in my first post, I am coming to AC from 2/3-2/11 with my mother for the first time. She is coming for a conference, I am coming for relaxation and fun.

So it seems that San Pedro has a pretty happening night life, but I was wondering if there is much stratification in the bars and such. I guess what I mean is are there bars/ clubs for younger vs. older crowds? Are there places where locals frequent or avoid?

Just curious--I'm asking because I'm sure my mom and I will want to go out together and I want a place she will enjoy.

TIA! I appreciate all the responses to my previous thread.

Marsali

P.S. One last question--is it safe for a woman to go out alone to clubs/ bars in the evening? My mother read in this silly guidebook that "single women should beware on AC" LOL! Thought I'd put her mind to rest.

If you've ever traveled to a Latin country, then you know that Latinos can be..forward. IMAHO this is true on San Pedro. Having said that, Ambergris is an island therefore there is really nowhere to hide. Normal precautions are called for, but overall you will be fine. That means no late night walking by yourself; other than that...I can't think of anything else. I stress, this is a safe place, some, "Hey, baby."s not withstanding.

The only place I felt comfortable being a woman of great age, by myself was FIDO'S. Fido's is large, two doors and they serve food, enjoyed the entertainment and I knew a few people that worked there, therefore I felt OK.

My rule of thumb is pick a bar that serves food, the wait person is more mindful of you, which keeps some of the bad element away.

I did walk alone from the Palace Casino and Fido's to my hotel the SunBreeze, w/o concern.

Best to walk the street IMHO rather than the beach, and I always had my trusty flashlight, for the dark spots.

I've been coming for years and am alone and have never been afraid to go out drinking or to walk alone to where ever I'm headed. I mean look, there are always gonna be some who "cat-call" and there are some opportunistic people in the world as well, but you have to put yourself out there and enjoy yourself. I refuse to travel and live in fear. Use your head and your eyes and have a great time.
Fido's is great, but I also like the Dockside(wet willie's) and Sharks Bar. The Pier Lounge is casual as is B.C's. If you shoot pool there are some good local places as well. smile

Marsali: I think most important thing for you to remember when you come to Belize is not to leave your common sense at home. I mean, of course I wouldn't stroll around at night, alone, on a secluded beach, that isnt' well lit. I feel more safe in this town that I ever have in any north american town or city, but as forest would say, "stupid is, as stupid does". laugh laugh

I traveled alone to Ambergris Caye for the SECOND time last month, it was even more wonderful the second time. I never felt scared, the people are wonderful, the culture is amazing, and everyone local helped me so much. They became my friends and I trusted the locals more than tourists! Though the tourists I met who travel there are kind as well. Of all 6 countries I have been to Belize was the safest. I walked alone everywhere, day and night, even with a backpack sometimes only on one shoulder(which made it obvious I was a tourist) and people treated me excellent. Going to Belize along was more than vacation, it has been a phenominal learning experience and educational. Belize is always in my heart.

We just got back from A.C. I walked alone along the main drag and felt comfortable. I'm in my late 50's and my husband and I both really enjoyed the beach bar, Cannibals. The bartender was fun (I forget his name) and he mixed great drinks and terrific rum punches....they have entertainment. This guy plays everything (blues, oldies, rock, country) and takes requests. There are also some young people there but the 3 times I was there, it was an older group primarily. Also some locals. We also saw tourists who had returned just like we did. It is a happy place. It is right by the water taxi terminal.

I just wanted to thank everybody for the responses. I wasn't really worried about the safety issue too much (Heck, I've lived in London and New York, and I'm sure AC can't be any worse wink ) but I just wanted to be able to put my Mom's mind at ease.

I appreciate all the advice on where to take my "aged" mother (She's only 50!)

Silkpainter, I am 27, but I'm an old married gal. Childless, and overweight--so I'm not really into that whole "meatmarket" scene. I KNOW I will have fun EVERYWHERE smile

Thanks again--we'll try them all out.
