We're planning our May honeymoon and are looking at:
Mata Chica
Portofino
Victoria House
and Turtle Inn @ Placencia

We'd like to stay in a cabana / casita on the beach and are trying to determine which resort might have the best swimming beach (if any.) Also, does anyone know if Placencia is known for being windy at this time of year? Are the others?
We're fully aware of the advantages / disadvantages of each resort's location and proximity to town... and after reading numorous posts it appears we really can't go wrong with any of these. We are just trying to find something to help us sway our decision!
Thanks so much for any help and suggestions!!

Victoria House by all means. We've stayed there twice. Once in Sept. and again in Dec. We're traveling back to AC in March and were so disappointed to find them booked. Lovely. Quiet. Incredible staff, food, bartenders. Stay in Palapa 7 or 8. Our first visit last May was to Journey's End where we were engaged. Also nice but a bit far. All the best, Cathy

Personally I think Mata Chica has a better swimming beach than VH. Most people swim off the dock at all the places.

joggirl, my wife and i stayed with buddy and tressa at maya breeze inn in placencia and it was fabulous.. we had a nice cabin more than a cabana they have bicycles to use and sea cayaks to use to go to a great area for snorkeling. they hooked us up with a fab guide to go to the cave of the golden seplucher, a wet water entrance cave, that was beyond belief, and then went at the same time to tikal guatamala to the mayan pyramids, for an unforgetable trip. they are fantastic hosts and you feel like family check out their web you wont regret it and they have a nice beach. congrats on your marriage my email is [email protected], i'll be on amb. caye 21 jan have fun

I guess my take would be that that once you're in the water they're all pretty similar for swimming. I might give the edge to Mata Chica's beach, which is beautiful. Turtle Inn's is pretty nice as well.

Turtle Inn's pool I would rate at the top (actually it has two pools but one is private to Frances Ford Copolla's villa). Victoria House's pool is great, too, though. Both are zero effect pools. Mata Chica and Portofino don't have pools.

Pretty much the same wind conditions exist in Placencia as Ambergris. May can be fairly windy, though that's a plus at Turtle Inn as it has no air-conditioning.
