When visiting the islands, I usually like to take along small gifts for the resort staff (T-Shirts, jeans, candy, etc.). I was in Cuba a few months ago and was amazed at how much anything made in the U.S. was appreciated.
Can anyone suggest what type of gifts I might want to take along on my first visit to Belize?
Also, has anyone on this message board actually seen a jaguar? Any chance that I'll see one? Are there any other cats on AC?
Thanks!

About as much chance of seeing a jaguar (or any wild cat, except for a catAMARAN) on AC as Janet Jackson has of being named Presbyterian Woman of the Year

the only place you're guaranteed to see a Jaguar is in the Belize Zoo.
Another chance for you to see one might be at the Jaguar Preserve here in the Stann Creek Dist.

John & Carolyn had one, named Tika, at Banana Bank Lodge too, said to be the most photographed jaguar alive.

Supposedly all five of Belize's cat species have at one time or another in modern times been seen on (far) North Ambergris. It's extremely unlikely that you would see any wild cat on Ambergris, though.
Best bet for seeing a jaguar, other than at the zoo or Banana Bank, is at Chan Chich Lodge. I think they average about one sighting a week. Cockscomb Preserve is another good place. I've seen tracks and scat there but never an actual jaguar. Also, there are quite a few jaguars farther south. Folks along the Southern Highway see them from time to time.

For a poor and deprived ex Internet Bar owner smoked salmon and caviar never goes amiss.

Thanks for the info. I hope to visit the Belize Zoo to see a jaguar, and maybe stop by Banana Bank Lodge to meet Tika (is BB Lodge on AC or the mainland?). Is Tika a housepet or does she live in a cage? Can I pet her?
Pedro1: Smoked salmon and caviar sounds purrrfect. Is Charlie, a/k/a White Fang a cat?
Thanks!

Charlie will be anything you want her to be if you bring smoked salmon and caviar.

Charlie is a woosie, or is it Pedro. Let call Holly and find out for sure.
