Hello all. Am new to the board and have loved everything I've read so far. I am planning a visit in May 2004 and want to know about how the diving is in May (must sees/don't waste time) and what is best dive operator to use. Also, I have heard that Blue Hole isn't really worth the time, but there are some other day trips that are. Please advise. This is our first trip to AC and appreciate all the info I can get.
Thanks! smile

How long have you guys been diving? What is your experience level?

There will only be one of us diving and by the time I get there I will have completed my Rescue Diver certification. I have been diving since 1993; but only have 60 logged dives. I have been on a few trips w/mulitday diving; I mean, that's what life is all about, right? I am working my way to DM certification. Thanks for the help! cool

Amigoes del Mar...."The Blue Hole" is fantastic and do "The Elbow" in Turneffe. There are some good dives right outside the reef off AC too.

Yep. You'll like Amigos. Pro 48 boat for the long trips, great people. Nobody else runs a boat that nice. Continental breakfast on the rides out, great lunches, experienced and knowledgeable DM's, decent gear, if you need to rent. Oh, and great people--did I mention that? wink

Do the Blue Hole so you can say you did, like a bunch of the rest of us. Or skip it and just do a bunch of close-in reef dives. The BH is a lot bigger deal before than after your dive. The Turneffe trips are very nice and I'd recommend at least one of them.

Tell Marciano that "Dad" from Nebraska says hi and we (the whole family) will see him soon. And I do trust them with my family (daughters ages 12 & 14 dove with them last year and our son, 8, had a ball snorkeling with the local kids who went along). I wouldn't say that about just any shop and get a lot more particular when the kids are along.

You will encounter sharks like this at The Blue Hole so beware!

In that case Scubalover, I highly recommend Amigos del Mar and I also suggest that you disregard your friends telling you not to bother with the Blue Hole. You should do it. I've done it 5 or 6 times and I'll always go back for more. Besides the followup dives and the lunch on the idyllic island make for one helluva way to spend a day.

We just got back, and I would also recommend Amigos del Mar. Class act all the way. Went out to Turneffe Sunday with Marciano driving the boat through some heavy weather and rain. That guy knows how to drive. In spite of the weather beating us up, we had a ball. The guys going out to the BH at least had a closed cabin. I would suggest doing the BH at least once and then make up your mind. One of those things you have to do once at least, and it is an enjoyable day in and on the water.

Thank you, everyone! I have heard good things about Amigos del Mar (even were mentioned in lastest issue of Sport Diver) and am glad to see overwhelming response in their favor! I know, I got to do the Hole just to say I did, and am sure I won't be disappointed! Besides, am used to crappy viz and freezing water (N. Cal) so anything beyond 50 feet and 75°is glorious!
I have loved the input from the members of this board. Thanks again! Can't wait to get my fins wet! laugh

Tried several other dive shops, but have done over a 100 dives with Amigos in the past three years. They're hard to beat, although I'm sure there are others who are as good or come close. Pro48 to the Blue Hole can go when no one else in SP can. Ask Big Zeke about how rough it can get at times, even in the 48. I was there. OOps.
