Has anyone been on some of the eco-tours or gone to the ruins on the mainland? I want to try and spend a day or two doing the jungle thang and hey why go that far and not see everything. Or at least try.

Hi Javaman,

We are just back from our third trip to AC this past Saturday. We did the "Lamanai" trip on the mainland for the second time. I believe it was around $139.?? per person but I can't remember exactly. We were there for 16 days and my brain is now in a fog after adjusting to home again. At any rate well worth the money. We used Searious Tours and found them to be wonderful both times we went. It basically consists of a boat trip to the mainland, a bus ride and another boat ride through mangroves and a stop in a little village called "Bomba". We then had a fantastic lunch cooked by one of the guys mom's on the beach. BBQ chicken, potato salad ect. They were very generous with drinks and snacks all day. The tour guide was great and showed us around in such a way that we were clear of the large group of cruise ship people that were in. You will see the mayan ruin and hopefully some howler monkeys. Very interesting. Willie the owner is a nice man and very knowledgeable. I am sure there are other good tours to go with as well though. Have a great time!! Rhonda

It took us until our third trip to go to the mainland -- AC is so nice. but we went to Altun Ha two years ago, and this time (fourth trip) we took the boat trip to Lamanai (with Daniel, who is a splendid guide).

The Altun Ha trip was fun. The Lamanai trip is a long day and really worth it. We did hear and see howler monkeys, lots of pirds, a baby croc. had a great breakfast of "johnny' cake (journey cakes) sandwiches, good food, plentious drinks, remarkable ruins.

Definitely do it.

A day trip to Belize City is fun, too. We had some stuff to buy for our place, and we took in the museum, which is really fabulous.

You certainly cannot see more than a small fraction of the mainland in a couple of days. After all, in terms of land area the mainland represents 99%+ of Belize.

For general interest, I'd rank Belize's major Maya sites in this order:

1. Caracol
2. Lamanai
3. Xunantunich
4. Lubaantun
5. Nim Il Punit
6. Altun Ha
7. Cahal Pech
8. El Pilar
9. Cerros
10. Santa Rita
11. La Milpa
12. Mayflower
13. Uxbenka
14. Cuello
15. Noh Mul

Of course, none of these rivals Tikal, which is easily visited from Belize.

While we're on the subject, Dept of Arch just released a collection of papers submited by archaeologists who work in Belize, that were presented at last years symposium in Belize. It's a wonderful resource for people who have a more than surface interest. The next symposium is scheduled for May and I would say well worth the visit.

Last August we did the Lamanai trip from AC via the tour thru Tropic Air. You leave early morning and fly into a sugar cane field, are transported by van (5 min) to the river and take a leisurely tour to the site (as the guide points out interesting flora and fauna). Early arrival means no crowd; we saw maybe 10 other travelers at Laminai (some menonites). We pretty much had the place to ourselves.

After lunch, a quick boat ride back to the field, and before you know it, you're back in AC by 1:30-2pm.

It was awesome.
