Our family started taking Vitamin B-1 to ward off the mosquitos as recommended in one of your postings. I,too, thought that would be better and safer than catnip and DEET. My question is how much did you take? We are taking 100-200mg/day (kids 100mg adults 200mg). This is after some research online and in various medical books(I am a nurse and researched the safety before taking it) However, I have been getting severe heartburn and decreased my dose to 100mg and still having problems. Did anyone in your family experience this...other boarders I'd appreciate any input. I thought that perhaps 100mg may be too much...thanks,Goody

sorry goody,
i do not remember the dosage. i started taking it a few weeks or so before we left. i wanted more protection than deet after my first trip through the mainland. the mosquitos and little yellow winged flies just licked the deet off for fun and then bit me! david and i can be standing side by side and i will be a bug buffet and he will not have one bite!
check out on the other "bugs in may thread" my tip abount vanilla extract. i am going to try it. i will try anything not to be bit. also i am going to pack some bounce dryer sheets. the sweet smell is supposed to repel mosquitos for some reason. i still don't know about the catnip.

Gay...thanks for a quick response...I have read all those things about dryer sheets and vanilla...I actually have some bath & body works Vanilla Noel that people comment on as smeling like fresh baked cookies!!! I'm doing the B1 and bringing the other stuff along. Last night I was up almost the entire night with heartburn despite pepcid and mylanta ...we leave in 6 more days and I started the B1 a week ago and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with taking it because in my research it did say it increases the stomach acids and my heartburn started the same time I started the B1. 100mg is the smallest amount and that's what I'm taking but I think I may give up or else I'll arrive in AC completely exhausted... frown not a good way to start out our dream vacation wink Thanks again...6 days & counting heartburn & all laugh

I would be careful about the vanilla Noel - I have been told that mosquitos are attracted to perfume - and that lotion may have some added to the vanilla smell.
