I see on the map that the reef seems to get closer
on the north-eastern side of the island(key).
Is the reef edge indeed a lot closer and are there any accomodations in that area? Primitive is ok with me--well not a hammock and two palms for $20.
My wife and two daughters are going to the French
Riviera for a week and I'm going to San Pedro.
I think I'm the Winner!

If you be solo and want any night life, wandering, lots of different food places and people meeting options at all, I'd stay in town, a bit South, or a bit North. Not totally North of the cut.
Boats go fast and everywhere to get ya there!
I loved the french riv till I met Belize... I was spoiled then, now me sees the light! (life) wink
Have fun!
