How are the night dives near AC? I have looked for a previous thread on the subject and have not been able to find one.

I am wondering if it is worth the weight and space to bring my big "night" dive light and the batteries.

Not a diver, but have had lots of fun snorkeling Hol Chan at night. Neat critters (creatures of the dark )!

Just got back the other day and the boys and I did the night dive. It was great, lots of fish. I wouldn't carry the light Amigos will rent one to you for 8 US. It's nice & light, carry on your wrist.

Hol Chan is a great night dive, but it can get a bit crowded. I've been on dives where there are so many dive lights it was like being in an underwater disco.

I brought mine and found it useful for the night dive and also for some of the swim-thru dives during the day. I have gone on many night dives and thought the night dive at Hol-Chan was pretty lame. The current is very strong and alot of concentration was spent on the current, not the little critters....Plus, it was pretty crowded. I would find a dive operation that will take you to the reef where there is little current.

I went on a night dive with Tulu and 3 other divers and it was fantastic! Although there were a bunch of other boats in the area, we didn't encounter the divers underwater until we headed back to the boat. I've never seen so many HUGE eels before, octopus, etc. I guess it just depends on when and who you go with. Tulu is like another fish himself and he ALWAYS manages to find things us touristas would miss!

...for what it's worth, the night dive at Hol Chan is one of my favorite dives. The current (like during the day) varies... as does the amount of people out there. We dove it a number of times when we were one of the only boats/groups out there. There's a ton of stuff to see at Hol Chan during the day... even more at night. I'd say definitely worth doing and hopefully you'll hit it at a good time.

When conditions are calm and there is a channel marker it is possible to go outside the reef to "normal" dive sites for night dives. These can be superb. Hol Chan is the only other choice and is a pleasant dive, so long as you aren't taken when there is a tidal race in or out. Protech (at the Yacht Club) gives hand lamps free to night divers, and the guide takes a high-power HID lamp to point out items of interest. To enjoy a night dive to the maximum you should already have dived the same site as a day dive. You'll be amazed how different a dive it is at night.

In another post someone suggested Tony at Fido's pier for a night snorkel. We had planned to talk to Tulu about a day trip to Mexico Rocks. Such decisions. Any recommendations on Tony vs. Tulu ?
