I live in South Florida,and this "pica pica" sounds like what we floridians call "sea lice." No one knows exactly what it is, and it's only around at the beginning and end of summer. bywarren is right - the less you wear in the water the less likely you are to get stung. As long as you swim/snorkel/dive naked, you'll be fine.

The ones I saw in Belize did NOT look like that. Maybe they are a different thing. But I heard Belizeans refer to them as sea lice & pica pica.

That may be because seeing two magnified like that, wouldn't appear the same as seeing a mass of them on the surface.

We found that calamine and benadryl helped a lot with the itching but the best thing to do is prevention! I agree with bywarren that being "slippery" keeps the pica pica at bay. Enjoy your trip!
