Is there any hotel on AC where you can snorkel from the beach or from a pier without taking a boat out?

There are several, but you will see a lot more if you go on one of the many boats....Our favorite is the REEF SEEKER...(The Glassbottom Boat... wink

Quite a few people snorkeled from the pier at Victoria House.

Ramon's has a nice snorkeling/sunning spot at the end of their pier. We saw tons of fish and a couple of rays.

Also try Wet Willie's pier on the North side of town. They have an artificial reef and the fish are fed. Saw lots just looking over the railing.

Have a blast!

Be VERY careful when you select a spot for snorkeling off a pier, especialy piers that are located in town where boat traffic is at it's heaviest.
Look first for the boat traffic lanes and for where boats moor - stay far far away from these spots, and every time you so much as hear a boat, poke your head up and look to see where it is, and where it is headed. Regardless of any notion you may have about swimmers and right of way, the fact is that if you want to live you need to get out of the way if a boat is coming towards you. You cannot rely on the idea that a boat dirver can see you - especially if you are swimming where you should not be swimming. I have seen a lot of people snorkeling in dangerous spots - and unfortunately I witnessed one person get run over by a boat. He had been repreatedly told not to go outside the marked swimming area, "but" he continued to do so - his third time outside the bouys ka-bam. This man lived.
Another tragically unwise person dedided to snorkel at the Texaco dock a few years back - he died.
Personal advice for maximum safety - do not snorkle at a pier during the peak boat-travel times - those times around resorts tend to be 8:30-9:30 am / 11:30-12 (mid-day) 2-ish and 4-ish in the afternoon.
There is veru little boat traffic from 12-2 pm, and it's a nice time to be in the water.

Most resorts offer kayaks which are great to get you to the reef or patches of coral.

The Mexico Rocks area is awesome. Very little boat traffic as well.

Portofino and Costa Maya Reef Resort are in the Mexico Rocks area.

Do you just hook your kayak to a buoy and jump off? How cool!

You can use a rope and tie the kayak to you while you snorkel. We thought about doing this, but the reef really isn't that close. And as you get closer it pushes you back. My opinion, your much better off using one of the tour boats to take you to the cool spots. Look for the threads with Tulu, he is great.

The problem with the kayaks is that the wind blows about 30 mph. all the time and the reef is straight to windward. By the time you get there you'll be too tired to swim! Coming back is easy though.
