The winter northers make for an effortless trip to the atolls... or Honduras.

thanks for all the help! we will be there in January, when I imagine the northers are, but what I can't figure out is how you could get into a kayak from the water!

No offense meant, but if ya can't get into a kayak from the water, you shouldn't be on the water in a kayak. Especially 1/2 mile offshore.

Here's a few hints.

Practice it right along shore, before you go out to deeper water and make sure you can get back in. Like anything else, it takes a bit of practice.

Have your partner hold and stabilize the boat from the opposite side you're climbing in on. Inside the reef the water is shallow enough to stand up in a lot of places. If not, just use one persons weight to offset the others'. Get alongside, kick up hard and grab the far gunwale(side), keeping your weight centered and pull yourself in.

Once the first person is in, they can use their paddle to stabilize the boat while the second person gets in. Shove the paddle down and bury it in the sand, then hold it tight to the side of the boat. If you can't reach bottom then hold the paddle blade flat and the shaft hard to the gunwale and use it as a lever in the water to offset the boarders weight.

Like I said before, practice before ya go way out yonder. Aint nothing but a thing. Wear a life jacket if you're not a strong swimmer.

CaSnorkler:

Wet Willy's has a ton of fish all around their dock and Paradise Villas has a great artificial reef just off their dock.

Banyan Bay also has a great artificial reef, a couple yards off shore. This resort also has glass bottom dingys!

Give the kayak thing a try, it's not for everybody, sometimes, when it is calm, you don't need to even get off the kayak.

When you're here in January, it can get a bit windy. It is not 30mph all the time, Tropical Storm winds start at 45mph!

The Bacalar Chico excursion, UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers some of the best snorkeling on Ambergris.

We visiting Journey's End a couple of years ago...and looked closely at where to snorkle. Journeys End and North (maybe a little south) is really the only place close enough to the reef. JER has buoys out by the reef, where you can tie up their kayaks and then snorkle. I think Capt. Morgan's is close also. Anything near town or south would be a bit of a haul. My son was 12 when we went and it was no problem.

We went snorkling off Ramon's this morning. It was great, hundreds of fish. A great place to practice before going out.
