Francis, Keeper of the Carts at Ramons

What makes San Pedro unique, in part, is its golf carts, a prime means of transportation in and around the mostly sandy roads of this home to about 8,000 San Pedranos.

Ramon's Village, a fixture in San Pedro, may have the best fleet of golf carts available of any resort on the island. All a bright Caribbean hot pink color, there's no questioning that they're the most distinctive golf carts on the island.

Overseeing Ramon's rental fleet of golf carts (and bicycles) is Francisco Aldana - known by most simply as Francis. He has worked in Ramon's golf cart and bike rental center for 11 years, the last nine as manager. For this easy going people person, being "keeper of the carts"is just plain fun.

"When I first started at Ramon's, there were two openings, one in the office and out here (in the golf cart rental center). I didn't want to be cooped up in an office. I'd rather be out here joking around with people," Francis says.

There are 17 golf carts under his keep; 10 for rent to guests of Ramon's, and seven for staff to use for airport transfers and pickups. He estimates that most guests who rent a cart do so for an average of about four hours. The carts run by an electric charge. "If you would drive one non-stop, I suppose the charge would last about eight hours. But it can usually go about two days with normal start and stop use."

Francis' jovial personality fits his job well: with the golf cart center located at the entrance of Ramon's, he wants to leave a good impression. "After they get off the plane, I might be the first person they meet on the island, and people's first impression of Ramon's and people on the island. And I love it. I love all the different accents from around the world, and the people you meet. They remember you, and they'll even stay in touch."

Ramon's features thatched roof cabanas hidden beneath coconut palms and lush tropical foliage, on the beachfront of the Caribbean. Guests can choose from Honeymoon Suites, Presidential and International Suites, Beachfront, Seaside and Garden view rooms.

Just across the street from Ramon's Village is Steve & Becky's Cute Little Hotel, brightly colored, British-colonial style cabins that are, well, cute, and complimentarily contrast the tropical cabanas at Ramon's. Guests at Steve & Becky's have full use of the amenities at Ramon's,including beach and pier access and pool usage.

The pool at Ramon's is over 80 feet long, designed with irregular curves, creating coves and peninsulas, with a feel of a jungle lagoon. Guests can sit in the pool and enjoy a cool tropical beverage from the world famous Purple Parrot, rated by singer Jimmy Buffett as among his top 10 favorite outdoor bars.

Ramon's Village boasts its own superb restaurant, and a pier that extends over 420 feet from the beach. Ramon's Village Resort is a PADI Gold Palm IDC Resort facility, with a dive center among Belize's largest and most respected.

Saw this article about my good friend Francis when I was on the island. Looking at a pic of him over my desk right now! The guy can fix anything! Mechanical wiz. Great dancer too! (the inside story!)
