Are ATM machines available in places like Ambergris Caye, Placencia, Caye Caulker, and San Ignacio in order to get cash? Or is it better to use traveler's checks?

I think we saw three different banks on AC. Only one has an ATM that takes american cards - you can access it 24 hours a day. The max you can pull out each day is $500 Belize ($250 US) and each $250 cost us a $3.00 charge from B of A plus about $3.78 in fees from the Belize bank. We also took some traveler's checks, our hotel would cash them into Belize currency or we just used them to pay - most places took them - no problem.

Belize Bank has ATMs that take most creditcards. The limit is not $500Bze, it is $500US per day, or more, I think, depending on your card. Caye Caulker does not have a Belize Bank branch, so you will have to go to the Atlantic Banck branch and use your card for a cash advance. You can look up Belize bank on-line and get more info! And by the way, the Belize Bank in San Pedro seems do "maintenance work" on the ATM on Saturday mornings or whenever the bank is closed, and things are therefore"temporarily out of order" when you seem to need money the most!

Thanks for the good info. It sounds like traveler's checks are still the easiest method and doesn't have any fees. I'll take both but plan on using the TCs.
