That doesn't sound too shocking with what I have read about the Florida's lobster fishery.

As of 1998 there were 544,000 traps, 2,158 owners, or an average of 252 traps per owner. This is in the midst of a huge effort to reduce the number of traps. In 1992 there were 825,179 traps.

Anybody up for a game of lobster trap bouy slalom?

How does that work and why not? Is there a law against them? Are they trying to hide them from other fisherman? How do they know whose is whose or do they just share? Just curious and thanks...

The water is shallow and clear so the traps are visible fromm the boat. Still so few fishermen here that they can sort out trap ownership OK.

just for the record, these are not traps ,more like houses , look like chicken coops .the lobster take shelter in them from predators .and they live there .. when he wants lobster he goes to his special spots.. and dives down with a mask and fins and sharp gaff and hooks them ..he has been doing that for forty years .. he learned that from his father ,and his fathers ,father. way before any gringo came to sanpedro.. he has been harvesting lobster forever..he says he knows over 200 spots all found by sight,no buoy.no marker truly amazing.love to watch him do it it takes real skill to find the spots..

Tulu always manages to find free-range lobsters for his beach BBQs... and what a cook!
