Ms. Parkey's foundation can generate tourism income without the exploitation of dolphins. Maybe she can create jobs for Belizean humans in her quest for tourism dollars.

There is a very productive discussion on this topic on the belizeforum board. Check it out if you're interested, as some scientists are weighing in with peer reviewed literature, etc. I sincerely hope that this project won't be allowed, for the good of the dolphins, the environment, and Belize.

mad Sir Isaac Newton ~ you are mean and nasty, and you should be ashamed of your comments to Lan Sluder. Unless you are also a complete idiot, you should understand that you can LIKE a person but still disagree with some of their actions. You might not be familiar, but it's how civilized people act.

Is there anything that can be done to put a petition together to avoid this from happening? When will the final decision be made? I am very opposed to the dolphin swim program. I'd like to know when there will be an answer.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Review is in process. The public meeting was held on October 6th, about 2 weeks after the public notices conforming to the DOE's proceedure were published. The public comment period for the EIA ends on October 15th. So you have until then to read the EIA, which is available at several locations in Belize, and submit your comments to the National Environmental Assessment Committee (NEAC).

The locations I know about include the Belize Biltmore Plaza on Northern Highway, and Dive Connections Office on North Front Street. There is also a copy in the library.

Contact information for the NEAC, which includes governmental agencies and 2 NGOs (Belize Audubon and BANCONGO) can be found through the MNREI and DOE. Their contact info is:

I've answered many questions regarding the details of the proposed Dolphin Encounter, which is part of a the EIA, on BelizeForums, so I won't repeat them here. You can read my previous posts and other discussion starting at http://www.belizeforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=003422

As a science advisor, I have chosen to remain neutral regarding the Dolphin Encounter component of the Hugh Parkey Foundation/Spanish Bay Conservation and Research Center's Environmental Impact Assessment. I was quoted earlier on Belize Forums as saying, "I strongly believe that the decision to approve or deny a captive dolphin facility in Belize should be made by Belizeans based on the most currently available social, ecological, economic, scientific, and educational data available". Thank you, Moon Boy, for an accurate quote, which I continue to stand by.

My 2 cents for what it's worth ...

Setting aside the moral issues of the dolphin's rights to be free I think Lan hit it right on the head with his initial posting - "Swim-with-dolphin parks say "Cancun" or "Florida" to me, not Belize. To me, swim-with-dolphins programs where dolphins are penned up give the wrong image for Belize's ecotourism industry."

Lan's right. I'm drawn to Belize because it is different than Cancun or Florida. If the government wants something to think about how about this. Once they turn Belize into Florida then they will start loosing tourists. After all it's a lot cheaper for me to fly to Florida or Cancun than it is to Belize.

Unfortunately, nowadays, we live in a "bottom line" world rather than a "morally right" world. Money will always win... sad, but true.

This just in from a friend,

I would like to propose a People Zoo.

One would be able to go and visit the people in thier normal habitat after being taken from the wild and caged. All care and respect would be taken to preserve thier natural activities.

Flipper smile

I read it on the internet so it must be true.
