Thank you for sharing the information on Sharks, SeaShell. That was very informative.

Abbreviated answers (at the risk of straying off-topic): Trip was Fantastic, made it to Sunday Mass, too tired from the Blue Hole trip for ladies night (but I heard them in the distance - till 2AM...), and I though Belikin was OK but Lighthouse Larger was superb (tastes just like Heineken). laugh

I think I had better prepare myself for encounter with sharks if I can..Once while snorkeling around Cancun I spotted a 2 foot baracuda and think I set a speed record for panicing . I didnt even fully realize it was there when I "knew" it was going to attack me.I think it didnt because it either couldnt swim as fast as me or it wasnt stupid enough to get anywhere near my flailing arms and legs as I frantically tried to get up on top of the water ( no time to try for the shore).
well seriously I am very scared of big fish ..and sharks hmmm. Do you folks sell rubber inflateable swimming pools with fish painted all over then ? I could fill it with sea water and snokel safely.

It was a snorkelling experience with a baracuda that got me into diving. Myself and another snorkeller (unknown to me) chased the cuda around for a while. I also saw all kinds of other wonderful fishies and decided snorkelling just wasn't enough for me. Since taking up diving, I've had some wonderful experiences with baracuda and even sharks. I've been right in the middle of a whirl of hundreds of baracuda and been right up close and personal with a reef shark or two. Just awesome experiences.

The only time I was nervous around a baracuda was when one of the DM's was chumming it. I wasn't too excited to see the baracuda getting so close to us divers, even the ones not feeding it. I suddenly remembered that I still had my gold chain around my neck and hoped like heck it wasn't showing.

I've had turtles so close to me, I could touch them if I were into that sort of thing. It's all a wonderful experience and if you don't bother them, they won't bother you.

Neil, you will have an excellent chance of catching sight of a nurse shark. If you keep your hands to yourself, a nurse shark won't bother you at all but you will be able to enjoy its elegance in the water.

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

I've seen a lot of barracudas, anywhere from 6 inches up to the normal 2-3 footers. I've seen 2 five footers, and even a 6 footer off the west coast of PR once. They make me wary, but aren't all that scary after you've been in the water with them a few times. I tend to give them a wide berth. The only real scare I had was on Grand Cayman. I was snorkeling out to a patch of coral about a hundred yards off 7 mile beach (how come so many islands have 7 mile beaches? Is it a standard?). It was a boring swim, sand bottom with a few weeds, so for amusement I dropped down to the bottom and chased a little fish for awhile, about 5 feet of water. When I got short of air, I started to ascend and when I was about a foot off the bottom, a 3 foot barracuda slid under me, apparently still chasing the same fish I had been tailing. Freaked me out and I headed back to the beach.

Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt

Remember the professionals' advice on avoiding shark attack - if a shark approaches, use your knife to stab your buddy and swim away in the opposite direction.
