Hi! I will be going to AC in about 2 weeks. I recently discovered this message board, and though I read most of the messages, I don't think I saw this covered. If so, I apologize. I heard that there is a 5% fee to use credit cards. Is that everywhere, or just certain places? Apparently AMEX is not widely accepted. Can anyone verify this?
Also, I am staying at the Belizean Shores. It sounds fantastic, but was wondering if anyone had any firsthand knowledge of it.
Thanks!

I think you'll love Belizean Shores! We spent a day there and the pool is wonderful as is Elvis the bartender! We stayed at Coral Bay Villa's which is owned by the same people.

Some people still charge more to use credit cards, but it's not so common. Diners Club and American Express are generally not accepted, as they're even more expensive for retailers and a pain to deal with - bring Visa and Master. But you'll stand a better chance of deals if you have US cash or travelers checks.

Some merchants will add on the bank charge. Your credit card company may also charge for a foreign transaction and the exchange rate can be not too attractive. Worse case scenario, it could run up to 10% additional for credit card use as opposed to cash. I know alot of people who have been surprised when they get their credit card statement on foreign transactions. Best check with your credit card company to see what the charges are. They vary from company to company.
